Thursday Entry 10

1. Did anyone critique your work this week? If so, what were their impressions?
A few:

P.B.
-his attention was mainly on the gestures of the girls.
-nothing was there to lead him to the idea of performance.
-consider the fact that im editing the shoes on and not actually putting them on/taking them off.
-consider DOING things in the shoe. creating an act.
-editing isnt interesting in its current state.
-sound is cliche. consider silent.
-black outfit is a non issue.
-consider literally transforming the self (Jillian McDonald)
-what is the work really about?
-doesnt see the work as being about that world. He thinks: discomfort, consciousness of self, the gaze, ect.
-think more about the role, becoming something.
-cliched roles as form?
-suggested Joe Zane's Styles piece.
-this kind of work is more quiet.

....overall, excellent and very helpful.

Class Crit:
-distracted by quality.......be sure to de-interlace
-contrast between small and large gestures. loud/quiet. people tended to gravitate more toward the bold gesture.
-fix the squish (thank you vcu projector)
-wonders what the purpose is behind the repetition
-how would the piece change if we watched it in real time?
-to someone clueless regarding my history in clubs, could this just be interpreted as work about gender identity and roles (yes!, and yes, im ok with that too. LAYERS)
-think more about the wardrobe- possibly stripper clothes?
-"stripping" is back story and not as clear now. i should consider my feelings on this. do i want that link or is it ok for people not to get it?
-consider a choir girl line up installation
-shoes ride a line and could be considered club culture.
-consider real time.
-mechanical
-confusion about shoes and what the viewer is supposed to take from that.
-REALLY focus on the repetition. what? why? how?
-narrow down repetition
-consider freezframe?
-diversify arguement. it seems as if im using the same argument for each channel.
-too much animation. focus lacks.
-again, the repetition. KNOW WHY.
-feels like the editing is there for the sake of technique.
-consider only using a loop.
-maya derin
-"kill your darlings"
-edit actions to match eachother in loop
-use more women and know why im using them
-coreograph the act.
-overlapping and opacity changes as form?
-technique should give meaning to the work.
-longer repetitions.
-repetitions not currently streamlined enough
-sound should be either silent or simplistic.
-shoes are problematic.they dont give enough of a clue.
-perhaps inserting pole?
-change the outfit.

P.T.:
-Editing needs clearer narritive.

A.G:
-cycling edits show frustration
-graphically "pretty"
-shoes clear plastic resemble pedestal.
-lower sound levels and normalize.
-image is formally strong
-metaphors are created through editing.

T.C.:
i forgot a lot of it, because i didnt take notes. however, sound was brought up. and the focused repetition.

...and i already posted my crit from Amy Hauft

What was the most motivational or creative moment of the past week?
i had some really good crits. This hasnt happened in a while. Im getting good feedback. I can work with a lot of what was said.

What do you want to achieve in next week's studio practice?
Im going to build a pole, as suggested. Im also going to do a few more edits of what i already have before i do a final shoot.

What did you achieve in your studio this past week?
Aside from 6 crits, i captured some footage that i already shot. Im doing more tomorrow. Ive slipped into editing mode. I made a two channel video. im going to aim for 5 or 6. If i can get more, then ill fit it in.

What has been an artistic failure this week?
This shoe talk keeps coming up. Im failing in my ability to disassociate stripper/sexualized performance with shoe. That shoe is such a strong symbol for me, that i get totally confused when its not that strong for someone else. It was said that the shoe references club culture.......which, in my opinion references stripper/sexualized performance. Paul said something interesting about that in the meeting today about how im ok with layers but the second someone doesnt get all the layers i intend i get mad. He is right. I do get mad.
clear heels=stripper=club culture
clear heels=club culture=stripper
all of which=sexualized performance
the shoe is important.

further.....
shaved chach=little girl=pervert alert
shaved chach=porn=exotic=unattainable/forbidden=little girl=pervert alert
its just a bad idea. nothing good comes of it.

it all boils down to the same thing.

What was the most profound thought in relation to your practice this week?
its better to be told to wait than wait to be told.

If there was a visiting artist this week, what is your impression of their work and process in relation to your own?
no.
